Generous Giving Guides:
A Stewardship Resource for Congregations Generous Giving Guides, established in 2006, are laypersons from the Northwestern Ohio Synod who have received extensive training in congregational and personal stewardship. The purpose of the Guides is to provide assistance to congregations in
matters related to Bible-based stewardship. The Guides’ goal is not to tell congregations how to practice stewardship; rather, the goal is to assist individual congregations in the discovery of what the best stewardship practices are for them. Examples of the services offered include: Consult with pastors and other congregational leaders; Assisting with Consecration Sunday and other stewardship programs; Building a list of stewardship contacts in congregations of each conference; Offering workshops for congregational leaders and/or stewardship committees. Stewardship is what we do after we say, we believe. One dictionary definition of stewardship is “the careful and responsible management of something entrusted to one’s care.” And we are stewards of God’s world—everything in that world is His. Our responsibility is to give our time, talent, and treasure in the careful and responsible management of God’s world. Stewardship is not only about money—it is about three things: (1) our relationship to God’s world; (2) our relationship with Jesus Christ; (3) and about ministry done through our generous use of what God gives us—our time,
talent, and treasure. Think of all the ministry done through Christ’s Church and ask yourself, Does God not want us to give of ourselves and of our treasure in support of the many ministries carried out through the Church? The appropriate focus is on our need to praise God through our personal and financial support of those ministries.
The words of Christ, from Matthew 6: 20 ”…store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,…for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Pastors and lay leaders are encouraged to reference the Generous Giving Guide available in the appropriate conference.
